Assessment Tools
Right to Read Screening Tool
The Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta (LDAA) developed the Reading Readiness Screening Tool (RRST) to identify the learning needs of students who may face reading difficulties.
PRESS
The University of Minnesota’s Minnesota Center for Reading Research created PRESS (Path to Reading Excellence in School Sites) following a 3-year instructional practice project. With progress monitoring tools, we can determine if an intervention is effective and make informed decisions about continuing or discontinuing interventions.
And more
We select additional evaluation and teaching materials with care to improve the personalized program for each student.

Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic awareness (PA) is a skill used to manipulate oral language. The focus is on learning to identify and manipulate individual parts of words. PA skills are the essential building block for learning to read. Through PA, we develop an ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds in words develop the pathways for reading and writing. All programs involve some degree of Phonemic Awareness, either as targeted skills, mastering skills or warming up.
Phonics
Phonics is the sound-letter combinations for the written code of language. Phonics skills are used to decode the different sounds within a word when reading. Knowledge of the phonetic rules is necessary to recognize the different cues and interpret the code accurately. This is how we know the word 'can' is not the same as the word 'cane'. Phonics programs are developed through a systematic, repetitive process that activates orthographic mapping. Orthographic mapping is a process of storing words in the long term memory through word pronunciation.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary knowledge is understanding the meaning of words. New words are constantly being learned and adapted. Without understanding all the vocabulary, words can be a fundamental barrier to accurate learning. Vocabulary is explicitly taught and reinforced to support fluid learning processes. As we grow up, vocabulary developed with the words we hear in conversation and stories. At school, stating in about grade 3, academic language becomes more complex and vocabulary terms become more specific to the academic context. When these terms start to show up in reading and at school, we need to learn the specific meaning and context to fully understand the subject matter.
Comprehension
Comprehension is the ability to effectively understanding and interpreting what we read. This is the reason we learn to read. Comprehension skills are explicitly taught, practiced and reinforced.
